Nearly all mattress pads have cotton fabric on the outside, but are filled with petroleum-based filling material, such as dacron, polyester, nylon, etc. These materials are essentially different types of plastic fibers and trap in body heat and moisture which, in turn, disrupts sleep. Additionally, many mattress pad’s fabrics have been treated with different acids and dyes or chemicals - chlorines, formaldehydes and bleaches - to color the fabric or chemically texturize the material to be smooth. Even certified organic grown cotton can be finished in bleach, dye or harmful chemicals… organic doesn’t always mean safe sleep. Cotton Care Mattress Pads vs. Mattress Protectors Ever wonder the difference between a mattress pad and a mattress protector? A mattress protector helps keep any fluids or moisture from seeping into the mattress. These are useful to protect mattresses from liquid, but the downside is “zero” breathability. Many times, industry claims breathability because the top layer is a natural fiber, but unless all layers are a natural fiber, there is no air-flow passage. (A simple test is to put the fabric close to your mouth and try to breathe through it. If you can’t, your mattress protector is not breathable.) These mattress protectors with their lack of air-flow can disturb your body’s natural temperature and lead to a bad night’s sleep. There is a place and time for mattress protection, but if you are concerned about allergies and a cool, even mattress temperature, you need to be sleeping on a breathable all-cotton mattress pad! We think the choice is clear and there’s no question to which is the most natural and the finest product!
